Kent Adult Education Response Programme

The Response programme, delivered by Kent Adult Education as part of Community Learning and Skills (CLS), is a specialist initiative designed to support adults across Kent in taking their first steps toward employment, volunteering or further learning.

Working in partnership with community groups, charities and local organisations, Response offers free, short courses that are practical, accessible and tailored to meet the needs of individuals who are unemployed or in low-paid work.

Who is Eligible?

You are welcome to join a Response course if you:

  • Are aged 19 or over
  • Live in Kent
  • Are unemployed or on a low income
  • Are looking to build confidence, gain new skills or take the next step into work, volunteering or education

What Can You Learn?

Response courses are delivered in community settings across Kent and cover a wide range of topics, including:

Pathways to Employment

  • Hospitality & Catering: Food safety, barista training, customer service, cocktail mixology
  • Construction & Manual Work: CSCS card preparation, health & safety, manual handling
  • Care & Health: First aid, saefguarding, health and social care
  • Office & Digital Skills: Basic IT, social media, conflict management, starting your own business
  • Education & Childcare: Working with children, healthy eating, supporting children's learning

Volunteering Skills

  • Confidence building
  • Communication and listening skills
  • Customer service for volunteers

Wellbeing & Personal Development

  • Mental health awareness
  • Mindfulness and stress management
  • Confidence and self-esteem
  • Creative crafts and relaxation

Courses are designed to improve physical and mental wellbeing, particularly for those returning to exercise or managing long-term health conditions:

Positive Steps: Social Prescribing Support

Tailored support is available for learners facing barriers such as:

  • Mental health challenges
  • Financial hardship
  • Accessibility and transport
  • Health and wellbeing concerns

Referrals can be made by link workers, community connectors or health professionals.

Thrive: Living Well with Long-Term Health Conditions

Thrive is a free 12-week course supporting adults aged 19+ with long-term health conditions. It includes:

  • Personal development and wellbeing support
  • Digital skills for everyday life
  • Confidence-building activities
  • Volunteering and employment guidance
  • Guest speakers and local employer visits

Courses are delivered at EKC Training Swale and Thanet Centres.
